Though the riverbottoms are well-watered by the Sweetwater, one need not be very far from the river to see the true desert nature of this region. This scene is taken only about a quarter-mile from the river, near a set of trail ruts well-enough defined to be visible from satelite images (see the MSR Maps link below).
